I would like to share a little about what I have been up to during the recent Pandemic.
As some of you may already know, COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the local fishing industries, all across the United Kingdom. Restaurants and fishing exports were closed, causing the fishing stocks to drop, leaving fishermen with no viable income.
My dad has now been a full-time fisherman out of the bay of St Ives, Cornwall, for 30 years. This crisis had a direct effect on my family.
During the last 4-5 weeks, I decided to set up a Facebook page that provided a door to door delivery service to anyone who lives within a 2-mile radius of St Ives Harbour. The idea was to allow my dad to keep fishing, earn a steady income and to support the local community with locally caught fresh produce.
The idea was an instant success, reaching 161,000 people within the first 24 hours, followed by the local BBC broadcasting service reaching out to televise an interview of my Dad.
Today, the page has 1500+ followers, delivered to over 150 different homes and has sold all fish caught in the previous month.
At first, this was an easy concept idea. However, once put into place, various logistical challenges quickly required a level of project management and organisation. It has also reiterated that with good preparation, teamwork and a little initiative, it is possible to make something good out of a bad situation.
