I’m in my 80s now but I lived in the same house since I was born, until I moved into this care home. Me and my husband were married for 61 years. I lived in my house and I met my husband who lived in a similar smallholding two miles away. We used to go to the farmers events together. We met and that was it really, we knew it was right at the time, we made a decision and that was it. I have four girls, maybe I’ve been spoilt, I don’t know. But I know I’ve had a happy life. I always say to my girls that they are too good to me and they say ‘mum it’s because you and dad were so good to us’. I love them to bits, I would do anything for them and they would do anything for me.

On the farm we had pigs and a pony and a donkey and we had a house cow. At Christmas time we used to buy 100 turkey chicks and then sell half of them and then rear the rest for Christmas. Everybody seemed to want them, it was just the time I suppose. Everyone wanted to buy something from the farm rather than the supermarket at that time. It was lovely. Now I’ve let my grandson go live in the house with his family. He’s got a little boy of eight and a little boy of six. I had a lovely Labrador dog that I’ve left to my grandson. I don’t go back to the house very much. I didn’t want to go because the dog was so fond of me and my husband that I wanted him to take to the children.

I’ve had a wonderful life and I wouldn’t have changed it for anything. Life is what you make it, I think. People are nice to me and I hope I’m nice to them. If you are nice to people, they respond to you don’t they. But there you are.
