I’m disabled and I live alone. My disabilities are invisible to people, it’s only if I told you about the pain and discomfort that you would know. My cats, on the other hand, know, and they have developed an adorable routine to care for me.
I get a lot of Migraines, severe joint pain, and stiffness. Because of this there are days where I am pretty much confined to bed apart from the odd shuffle to the bathroom and back. Kodi and Nanook, my Russian Blue x Ragdoll kitties, never leave me alone when I’m sick or unhappy.
If I’m in bed unwell, Nanook will lay with me, touch me with his paw, purr by my side, and spoon with me. He stays with me for hours, checking on my face, purring and touching me to comfort me. Migraines are terrible, but Migraines with Nanook are also adorable. He can’t do it forever though right? That’s when the brothers make a shift change. Kodi will come in, chirp, and take Nanook’s place. As Kodi hops onto my chest and purrs in my face, Nanook will go and get lunch, then take a walk around outside for some fresh air. For as long as I am in bed, my sweet little lads change shifts and keep a 24-hr guard around me.
It’s not just when I’m sick either. I get sad from time to time like everyone else, and when I lost someone dear to me, I did a lot of crying on the sofa. Kodi heard me, realised these were not normal mum noises, and came to sit next to me. He placed his paw on my hand and began to purr. For the next 3 hours he sat on my lap or by my side with his little toe beans touching my skin to reassure me. He never slept or walked away. Nanook came in later for a shift change. They spent the rest of the day never more than a meter away from me watching and purring. Even when I cooked dinner, I turned around and saw my two little mental health nurses in loaf mode on the kitchen floor, watching over me and looking concerned.
Yes, I live alone, I don’t share with any humans. My cats though are the gentlest, kindest little fuzz clouds I could ever ask for, and they return my care and attention five-fold. I’m super glad I have.
