The Power of a Like-Minded Community to Benefit Your Mental Health

I went to a free Sausage Sizzle at my church today (if you’re not Australian, Google it).

It was the first time going to church in months. I was greeted by a few people I knew, “Charli! Long time no see! How are you?” and it warmed my heart. Belted out some hymns, we started on a new series of sermons, all in all it felt like a great return to church for me.

I cannot stress enough the power of a like-minded community to benefit your mental health. It doesn’t have to be a church of course, that’s what works for me. For you, it could be a fitness class, theatre group, choir, arts and crafts.

One of the women from church gave me a lift to the train station that takes me home. I love that my community isn’t limited to arriving and leaving times. She asked “see you next Sunday?” I said “for sure!”

I was just so happy. I can’t describe it. Not like party happy or mania, not exactly serene or chill, but peaceful yet excited. I’ll be donning my green “church skirt” and late grandmother’s turquoise ring next Sunday for sure.
