I don’t remember what grade I was In but I think it was around 4th or 5th grade. I was waiting after school with my brother to be picked up from an afterschool program. During that time the kindergarteners were raising chicks like they always do each year and kids and staff would go in there to check out the chicks. I also wanted to do this, so when my mom came I asked her if me and my brother could check the chicks out. She said sure but as long as I ask a teacher. Our principal was standing there so I approached her and politely asked if we could see the chicks. (please keep in mind our principal was amazing and this one incident does not define her, I could also thank her for giving me this experience) She looks at me and reply with a confused and annoyed response and it went something like this: “What?! NO. We’d have to ask Mrs.J (the kindergarten teacher)” She said it so annoyed I backed away and I was almost on the verge of tears. I see a parent come up with a bunch of kids and ask her the same thing I asked her and she replied with a simple “Oh yeah, of course.” A few tears almost roll out but I hide them. Maybe I was little and overreacted and that’s why I felt immense sadness. I went to my mom and said we can’t see the chicks, still holding back tears. I can’t really put the emotions I felt into words but I still remember it to this day.
