My dad met another woman, he was 40 and she was 19. One day I got home from school and she said ‘I’m married to your father now. I’m going to put you in a boarding school because you’re mental’. They sent me to a school for special needs in Southwest England. I ran away three times and the police caught me. People used to have their family come and visit but I had nobody. Even in the holidays. There was one girl that kept on to me about my parents. One time I lost my temper. Really lost it. I rammed her into one wall and then rammed her into another. It took five teachers to calm me down. I was 15.
We used to get up to mischief. The boys were on one end of the school and the girls on the other. There used to be a lookout so we would have shifts and go to the boys end to have a bit of fun. The nurse would come in and say ‘what’s going on here?! Whys the window open’ and we would reply ‘to let the fresh air in’. Then I’d shout to my friend ‘Come back, Sargent Majors here’. Then one time one of the girls got stuck on the drainpipe and couldn’t get back. Sargent major looked out the window and asked ‘What’s Kelly doing down there?!’ ‘ummmm.. ummmmmm..’ we didn’t know what to say. Then one of the boys shouted out of the window ‘You alright Kelly, what you doing down there?’. We did have some laughs.
I’ve been in care since I was 10 and I’ve been in some rotten places. And where I am now, they love me like a daughter and its very nice and supportive. I’ve had some really bad experiences and it’s taken me a long time to forget. It took me a while to trust people. But now I’m here, if I’m upset, I can always talk to someone. When I first arrived here, I couldn’t speak to anyone and now they can’t shut me up. Until I arrived here, I used to keep things inside. But now I can tell my story. I still think about the past but that’s it. Now I’m thinking of going on a holiday. I’m going to go on my own this time. I have more confidence now.
